Services - Digital Forensics

The Digital Information and Computer Evidence (DICE) Laboratory, headquartered in Fredericksburg, Virginia, specializes in the seizure, secure transportation, and examination of digital evidence. Directive 63 provides critical support for federal government, state and local law enforcement, as well as corporate and legal professionals.

As businesses, organizations, governments, and citizens become increasingly dependant upon technology, the secure exchange of information becomes more complex. Information has always been a valuable criminal commodity, one that can now be easily mined from the virtual world.  High tech and white collar crimes are increasing at a rate with which ordinary enterprise can not compete.

Defined by the New Shorter Oxford Dictionary, computer forensics is the application of forensic science techniques to computer based materials. A digital forensics examiner acts as an information analyst, investigator, and computer scientist in order to provide sound forensic support.  Directive 63's Digital Information & Computer Evidence Laboratory is a full service computer forensics laboratory operated by certified computer forensics examiners with federal, state, and civilian experience, and is equipped with the latest forensic tools updated regularly to accommodate evolving technologies.

The information essential to corporate investigations, litigation, and data security violations are now found on a large variety of digital media devices. Desktop computers are no longer the primary storage and communication device for individuals and corporations as people embrace a multitude of new technologies.  As today's norm, information is stored and exchanged on multiple devices by each person in every organization -- mobile phones, smartphones on a variety of operating systems, mp3 players, portable storage, digital cameras, tablets -- and each device provides a unique way for breaches to occur in a business or evidence to reside after a crime.

According to the FBI, 85% of crimes committed today leave behind a digital signature. Digital forensics is now an integral and essential part of properly investigating and prosecuting the majority of crimes, infractions, and violations -- corporate, civil, or criminal.
